Fiona + Douglas
Morning Bow Lake Family Photography
Whenever I do a family photography session with a fellow photographer I have this overwhelming moment of ‘What if they hate me? What if they expected more from me? What if they dislike their images?’ It’s just an inevitable stream of thoughts. So when Fiona reached out I had all those thoughts coupled with ‘Me?’ For Fiona herself is a photographer (which, you may have picked up), originally based in Toronto but now onto Vancouver (more on that shortly). She has an innate use of light, you can tell through her photographs she creates an honest and inviting candorship with her clients to create the images she does.
In short, she’s good. She’s very, very good. Also, you should check her work out.
Anyways, enough of those insecurities. Fiona reached out several weeks before her planned road trip across the country. For they were moving west to Vancouver for Douglas’ work. She was interested in a family photography session to mark a special time as they moved westward, to capture moments in the Rockies after days of beautiful prairies before they entered British Columbia and their new home. So I obliged, after much of the previous thoughts.
So on a ridiculously early morning, I met this crew, two adults, who were quite alright with long car rides; and one five-month-old paired with a senior greyhound who were quite decidedly not okay with long car rides, at Bow Lake. We watched as the sun rose above the parallel mountain and hit Crowfoot Mountain. Then as the light made its way across Bow Lake to us, warming the frosty fields we stood in. As it started as a soft glow, then rose in the sky and made its presence more known and directional.
So we explored all Bow Lake gets to offer for a family photographer. Them, obliging my distracted nature as I used the light – knowing they understood the plight of a photographer. Me, perpetually apologizing that there was no differentiation of the tone I used to speak to their child and dog (because I truly only know how to speak to dogs and little kids didn’t get too fussed by it). That all said, their son was far more entranced with the forest we explored than whatever dog speak I was giving him.
Truly, it was an honour to photograph this part of your family’s journey. Thank you.
